Leyendo este post de Nicholas Carr en el que aparece en varias ocasiones el concepto de la «virtualization of the computing infrastructures», se me hace un pequeño lío la cabeza. El artículo navega en torno a la cuestión de la virtualización de servidores y predice un cierto declive en el campo de este tipo de cacharrería. Según este gurú, the server market is a big one, and it looks fairly healthy at the moment. But that may be an illusion. There are growing indications that the server business is a dead man walking.
El asunto tiene que ver con un cambio de estrategias de ciertos monstruos empresariales. Están reduciendo su número de servidores. In this scenario, the core unit of business computing would not be small, inflexible servers but rather large, flexible computing clusters or grids. These clusters in turn would be built not from traditional branded servers but from cheap, commodity subcomponents – chips, boards, drives, power supplies, and so on – that the grid operators would assemble into tightly networked physical or virtual machines.
Y como siempre la referencia al modelo Google, modelo de éxito: Google doesn’t buy any servers to run its search engine. It buys cheap, commodity components and assembles them itself into vast clusters of computers that it describes as «resembl[ing] mid-range desktop PCs.»
Más o menos es algo así como una interpretación libre del modelo federalista para gestionar empresas. Grande pero pequeño, grande pero ágil, el poder en la base, adiós al tamaño porque sí. Si eres grande y no sabes actuar como cuando eras pequeñ@, estás hundid@.
